GD05 Freedom Ascension Metagame Report: What's Winning

Freedom Ascension is out, and it did exactly what a 1st Anniversary set is supposed to do. It blew the format wide open. This post is about what's happening at the tables now that the set has had a couple of weeks to settle in.

What Changed: Two New Pillars

Strike Freedom Gundam and Nu Gundam are the headline additions, and both have already carved out top-tier archetypes.

Blue/White Kira Blockers was already a known shell built around [Blocker] and board control, but the extra Kira Yamato support in GD05 lets the deck lean harder into early [Kira]-named pairs without giving up its late game. Strike Freedom Gundam slots in as a payoff that rewards you for committing to the archetype early, and it pairs naturally with holdover pieces like Victory Gundam (early draw) and V-Dash Gundam (board control) from prior sets.

Nu Gundam decks are the other pillar to watch. Early tournament data has Nu Gundam leading deck share, with Strike Freedom close behind across two distinct builds. It's a strong, safe pick if you want a deck with a proven track record heading into the new format.

The wrinkle both decks share: they're built to play a longer, controlling game, which leaves a door open underneath them for faster strategies.

Aggro Isn't Dead — It Just Has a New Face

A lot of players assumed the pre-release banlist changes killed aggro. That take is wrong. One Year War Zeon Rush came through the banlist largely untouched, and GD05 introduced a genuinely new aggressive archetype: Phantom Pain, built around cheating units onto the board early and forcing discards to punish slower Blocker-style decks. If you're seeing a lot of Strike Freedom mirrors at your local shop, Phantom Pain is the deck most likely to be lurking underneath, ready to race before the control shells stabilize.

Keywords to Know This Format

If you're new to GD05 or coming back after a break, these are the mechanics doing the most work right now:

  • [Blocker] – redirects an attack to the unit with this keyword; the backbone of every White-splash control shell.
  • [Link] – the new Link Rare rarity pairs specific Units and Pilots; several GD05 archetypes are built to maximize these named pairings for stat and ability bonuses.
  • [First Strike]-style tempo removal – Blue's bread and butter since GD01, and still the reason Blue/Purple Tempo hasn't fully left the conversation.
  • EX Base / EX Resource – GD05's new resource types add flexibility to mana bases and are showing up as one- or two-of tech pieces across multiple archetypes.

Tier Snapshot (Early GD05)

  • Nu Gundam variants – proven, consistent, currently the most-played shell.
  • Strike Freedom Gundam (Blue/White Kira Blockers) – the highest ceiling deck in the format, weak to being raced.
  • Phantom Pain – the new aggro answer to a control-heavy field; punishes slow starts hard.
  • One Year War Zeon Rush – the format's long-running "safe and consistent" aggro pick, unaffected by the banlist.
  • Master Gundam - another high ceiling deck with a strong mid and endgame. 

This will keep shifting as more tournament data comes in over the next month, so treat this as a snapshot rather than a final tier list.
